The Office of Problem Gambling Services (OPGS) works with multiple vendors across the Commonwealth to offer continuous training and learning opportunities for providers and others to learn more about prevention, intervention, treatment, recovery services, and research related to problem gambling. We’re pleased to share some of the work we completed in FY23, as well as ongoing learning opportunities you and your community can engage in!
Health Resources in Action (HRiA) recently hosted its 8th Project BuildUp (PBU) Learning Academy titled "Promoting and Providing Problem Gambling Treatment Services to People with Incarceration Experience".
This 6.5-hour program focused on strategies for supporting individuals with gambling-related problems who are also working in the criminal justice system. The program brought together mental health providers and allied health professionals to enhance their understanding of gambling disorders, the social, economic, and potential criminal consequences, as well as financial literacy skills to protect against gambling-related harm.
The sessions also featured personal recovery stories from two guest speakers profoundly affected by problem gambling, both of whom discussed overcoming obstacles and achieving successes by sharing functional steps toward change in their individual recovery journeys. The final session provided space for participants to interact about their learning experiences through breakout and all-group discussions.

The Massachusetts Technical Assistance Center for Problem Gambling Treatment (M-TAC) recently launched the Community Voices in Recovery course, which places a spotlight on the transformative power of storytelling.
M-TAC recognizes the significance of promoting empathy and understanding perspectives, particularly within the healthcare industry. This course specifically aims to equip healthcare providers and allied health professionals with the tools needed to deliver optimal addiction care for patients.
